The Kings and Scribes project at Winchester Cathedral focused on the regeneration of the south transept, creating a new visitor experience centred around the display of the historic Winchester Bible.

The scheme formed part of a wider programme of conservation and enhancement works within one of England’s most significant historic cathedrals.

The project required the sensitive integration of new structural elements, including a lift and mezzanine access, within a highly significant historic fabric. Works also needed to address repairs to the presbytery roof, high-level vaulting and stained glass, all within a complex heritage environment where access, conservation requirements and structural constraints were critical considerations.

SFK provided structural input to support both the conservation and adaptation of the cathedral spaces.

The design carefully integrated a new lift and mezzanine level to improve accessibility to the Triforium Gallery, while ensuring minimal impact on the historic structure. Repair strategies were developed for the roof, vaulting and glazing, working in close coordination with the wider conservation team to respect and preserve the existing fabric.

The project successfully enhanced public access and interpretation within the cathedral, enabling the display of the Winchester Bible in a prominent and accessible setting.

At the same time, essential conservation works to the roof, vault and stained glass helped secure the long-term condition of the building, delivering a balanced outcome between heritage preservation and modern visitor requirements.
