Brill Windmill is a historic timber-framed structure of significant heritage value, dating back several centuries and preserved as a static monument.

A conservation programme was developed to stabilise the structure, retain as much original fabric as possible, and improve the visitor experience while restoring the external appearance to reflect its working condition in the 1920s.

The timber frame exhibited extensive decay, particularly within the front elevation which carries the load of the sails and windshaft. Key structural elements including corner posts, beams and joints had deteriorated or failed, with much of the load being carried by a later steel support frame. The challenge was to address structural instability while preserving historic fabric.

SFK Consulting developed a conservation-led structural strategy that retained and adapted the existing steel support frame rather than removing it.

Targeted timber repairs were specified, including reinforcement of key structural elements using discreet steel plates and ties. The approach balanced structural stability with preservation, while allowing for improved internal space and reinstatement of traditional external features.

The strategy enabled the stabilisation of the windmill while retaining its historic character and maximising the preservation of original materials.

Structural interventions were carefully integrated to support long-term performance, while enhancing the internal environment for visitors. The project demonstrates a sensitive and pragmatic approach to conserving complex historic timber structures.
