The project involved the conversion of four Grade II listed thatched timber barns into high-quality residential accommodation.

The barns formed part of a historic rural setting and required careful adaptation to enable modern living while preserving their character.

The barns required extensive structural repairs, particularly to deteriorated timber frames and roof structures. Introducing new floor levels within lightweight historic buildings posed additional complexity, requiring structural interventions that would not compromise the integrity or appearance of the original fabric. The rural location also required improved access to support residential use.

SFK Consulting developed a sensitive structural strategy focused on repairing and retaining the existing timber framework wherever possible.

New internal timber structures were introduced to support first floor accommodation, designed with minimum impact to the existing buildings and detailed to be reversible. Repairs to the thatched roofs and timber walls were undertaken using appropriate materials and techniques. In parallel, a new 400m access track was designed to improve connectivity to the site.

The project successfully transformed redundant agricultural buildings into desirable residential properties while preserving their historic character.

Structural repairs enhanced the longevity of the barns, and the new internal framework enabled modern use without intrusive alterations. Improved access ensured the site is functional and accessible, supporting its long-term viability.
