Gunnersbury Park

Location: Gunnersbury, Hounslow

Client: London Borough of Hounslow and Ealing

Architect: Rodney Melville

Value: £6m

Gunnersbury Park is a Grade II* registered historic park in west London, jointly owned by Ealing and Hounslow Councils.

Spanning 72 hectares and containing numerous listed buildings, it underwent a £13m regeneration to transform it into a major visitor destination, enhancing its heritage assets and public engagement.

The project required the conservation and adaptation of multiple listed structures, including two historic mansions. Key challenges included upgrading buildings for modern museum use, improving circulation and accessibility, and strengthening floors for increased loading. All works needed to be carefully managed to protect historic fabric while accommodating new services and visitor requirements. A new single storey cafe was constructed to serve visitors to the Park.

SFK Consulting developed structural solutions to support the adaptive reuse of the historic buildings.

This included floor strengthening, insertion of lifts, and repair of timber and masonry structures. Works were carefully coordinated with conservation requirements, while enabling new facilities including exhibition spaces, a learning centre and a visitor café.

The project successfully revitalised Gunnersbury Park as a major cultural destination, enhancing access, interpretation and visitor experience.

Structural interventions enabled safe and sustainable reuse of historic buildings, supporting museum functions and public use. The scheme demonstrates how sensitive engineering can unlock the potential of heritage assets while preserving their significance.
