Uphill Manor is a Grade II* listed Gothic mansion dating from around 1805.
Following a catastrophic fire in August 2016, the building suffered extensive damage, particularly to the bedroom wing and entrance hall, with major roof collapses and severe structural instability.

The fire destroyed large areas of roof structure, attic floors and sections of first-floor construction, while leaving significant volumes of unstable debris suspended above vulnerable rooms and circulation spaces. Tall, slender internal masonry walls had lost their lateral restraint and were at risk of collapse, while heavily loaded floors below were in danger of failing under the weight of debris. As a Grade II* listed building, all stabilisation and repair works needed to be carefully designed to protect surviving historic fabric while making the structure safe for investigation and restoration.
The project established a safe and practical route from emergency stabilisation through to full restoration of the fire-damaged manor.
The strategy protected the surviving structure, allowed safe access for repair works and created the conditions needed for sensitive conservation of a nationally significant historic building. The success of the restoration was recognised with the RICS South West Conservation Award in 2019.
