The Garden Building at Lincoln College is a sensitive addition to a 600-year-old campus within Oxford’s Central Conservation Area.

The project extends and refurbishes the existing 1905–06 Read & MacDonald building, creating a revitalised facility for events, performance, teaching and dining across three levels.

The scheme required careful integration of new and existing architecture within a highly sensitive historic setting, adjacent to the 17th-century College Chapel and the early 20th-century Rector’s Lodging. The engineering design had to consider the archaeological sensitivities of the site and the challenge of constructing a 4m deep alongside two sensitive listed buildings.

The three-storey extension was designed to respond to the geometry and rhythm of the existing structure, including a 4m deep basement constructed within 1.5m of the existing Garden Building and within 3m the grade I listed Chapel.

A contiguous piled wall was used to form the basement using a ‘top down’ method of construction to ensure that the excavation was fully braced to minimise any movement in the adjacent structures. Monitoring was undertaken throughout the construction of the reinforced concrete substructure to protect the surrounding historic structures. The superstructure formed in a light steel frame to integrate with the architectural envelope.

The completed building delivers a series of flexible, high-quality spaces that support a wide range of college activities.

The project successfully balances contemporary intervention with historic context, enhancing the existing structure while providing a cohesive and engaging architectural environment.
