The Brewhouse is a Grade II listed building likely dating from the 16th century. Over time the structure has undergone a number of alterations and structural modifications, reflecting its long and varied history.
Having remained unused for many years, the project sought to bring the building back into active use by creating a high-quality facility for music rehearsal and recital, alongside office accommodation for the Director of Music.

The building’s historic fabric presented several structural challenges. Load-bearing masonry walls at ground level support a first floor and pitched roof framed with historic oak timbers, many of which required repair and strengthening. Introducing modern accessibility and performance facilities within the listed structure required careful design to minimise impact on historic elements. In addition, the site contained areas of archaeological sensitivity which influenced the approach to new foundations. Existing drainage was combined and in poor condition and therefore not suitable for ongoing use.
The restored Brewhouse has been successfully transformed into a vibrant music facility supporting rehearsal, recital and academic activities.
Sensitive structural interventions enabled the sustainable reuse of the historic building while preserving its architectural character. The project has received significant recognition for its conservation approach, winning a Civic Trust Award 2023 and the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2022 for Best Conservation Alteration or Extension of an Existing Building.
