School Hall, Eton

Location: Eton

Client: Eton College

Architect: Hopkins Architects and Lewandowski Architects

Value: £14m

Eton School Hall is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1908 as a War Memorial Hall and forms the heart of college life.

The project involved the full refurbishment and restoration of the building, with the aim of creating a world-class music performance and assembly space.

The works required significant upgrades to acoustics and overall performance while preserving the building’s important historic features. The existing fibrous plaster ceiling was nearing the end of its life, and the building required improvements to audience and performer experience, accessibility and supporting facilities.

A new moveable floor was introduced to allow the Hall to transition between flat-floor use and raked seating.

Acoustic performance was enhanced through the installation of a suspended acoustic array above the stage, together with increased absorption and reflectors around the perimeter. The basement was upgraded and deepened to accommodate elements of the moving floor and provide storage. The original lath and plaster ceiling was replaced using moulds formed using 3D scanning to replicate the original design. Alterations to the stage, choir stalls and backstage areas improved functionality with a new lift incorporated. Visitor facilities were improved with a new cloakroom and toilet facilities.

The refurbished Hall now operates as a highly successful recital space while continuing to support a wide range of functions within a busy school environment, combining modern performance requirements with the preservation of its historic character.
