Innovation Centre, Marlborough
Location: Marlborough
Client: Marlborough College
Architect: Allies & Morrison
Value: £2M
The Innovation Centre at Marlborough College forms the first phase of a wider programme to expand science and innovation teaching facilities on the historic campus.
Located adjacent to the River Kennet, this new two-storey building provides approximately 1,000 m² of flexible teaching, exhibition and collaborative learning space. Extensive glazing and generous floor-to-floor heights create an open and inspiring environment designed to support modern science education.

The building needed to provide highly flexible teaching spaces while responding to the environmental constraints of a riverside location. Large open areas were required to support exhibitions, demonstrations and collaborative learning, demanding long spans and minimal internal structure. At the same time, the design had to address potential flood risk and ground conditions close to the river while integrating sensitively within the wider college campus.

The completed Innovation Centre provides a contemporary and adaptable environment for science teaching and exhibitions.
Column-free internal spaces allow a wide range of teaching formats and collaborative activities, supporting the college’s ambitions for innovation-focused education. Surface water from the building is managed through a controlled discharge strategy to the River Kennet, while raised floor levels help mitigate future flood risk, ensuring long-term resilience for this important new facility.
