School Yard, Eton

Location: Eton

Client: Eton College

Architect: Martin Ashley Architects

Value: Not disclosed

Eton College’s historic School Yard, bordered by Lupton’s Tower and the College Chapel, is a significant and well-used space that had evolved over centuries.

Incremental changes driven by pupil movement had led to an irregular surface and deterioration of the original layout.

The refurbishment was complicated by sensitive underlying conditions, including a network of shallow historic brick culverts, variable ground conditions, and the presence of archaeology. These constraints required careful coordination to avoid damage while accommodating new large and small element paving and ensuring long-term durability in a trafficked environment.

SFK Consulting acted as Civil Engineer, developing a flexible and responsive design approach.

As works progressed and previously unknown features were uncovered, solutions were adapted in real time to protect historic elements while enabling the installation of high-quality paving, including York stone. The design balanced structural performance with conservation principles, ensuring minimal intervention to underlying features.

The project successfully transformed the School Yard into a durable and visually coherent space, enhancing its usability while respecting its historic significance.

Sensitive engineering solutions preserved the underlying heritage assets, and the new paving provides a robust surface suited to continued intensive use.
